WGSS Annual InQueery Symposium 2022: “Connecting Trans and Reproductive Justice.”
On October 29th, 2022, WGSS held its annual InQueery Symposium, titled “Connecting Trans and Reproductive Justice.”
InQueery 2022 featured graduate and undergraduate student scholarship on the important connections between trans and reproductive justice political frameworks, both presently and historically. Student papers ranged in topics from the importance of medical professional education on how to effectively take care of trans masculine patients, to disability abortion bans, transgender representation in children’s media, research ethics, and the importance of the inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ parents and families. The keynote speaker for the 2022 InQueery symposium was the award-winning author and ground-breaking historian on transgender medicine, Dr. Jules Gill-Peterson. In her research, Gill-Peterson reconstructs the medicalization and racialization of children’s bodies in the U.S. dating back to the 1900s through the 1970s. While conducting archival research for her book, Histories of the Transgender Child, Gill-Peterson came across an archive from 1920 through 1970 which helped her write the award-winning book that demonstrates how gender has been dependent upon the medicalization of children’s racialized plasticity; the book challenges systems and dialogues in our current medical models.
