WSU held a research symposium on gender and colonialism on Sunday, April 28 at the Dengerink Administration Building in Vancouver. Faculty presenters came from a wide range of US institutions and locations, including Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawai’i. The symposium included ten different presentations about scholarship on gender and colonialism, which were divided into three panel sessions: Decolonizing History/Historiography, Dissonant/Unruly Bodies, and Gendered Spaces in Empire.

The Gender and Colonialism Symposium was funded through the WSU 2018 Arts and Humanities Fellowship, which was awarded to Sue Peabody, professor of History and Affiliate Faculty in the Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Dr. Peabody was one of six WSU faculty members to receive the 2018 Arts and Humanities Fellowship, which is awarded to projects that are intended to advance faculty professional goals and university-wide arts and humanities initiatives. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Center for the Arts and Humanities also hosted a monthly Fellows Seminar to support and promote the six faculty members’ projects.

This symposium was a collaboration between the History and English departments, with five WGSS affiliate faculty members participating in the Symposium organizing committee, including Jenifer Barclay, Luz Maria Gordillo, Nishant Shahani, Marian Sciachitano, and Sue Peabody.
