Three WSU students attended and participated at the third annual Northwest Undergraduate Conference in the Humanities in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at North Idaho College. The Program in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies funded undergraduate students Kayley DeLong, Jude Knife, and Alejandrx Martinez to present their original scholarly work in the form of conference papers. Mentor and WGSS Affiliate Faculty and Associate Professor of History Linda Heidenreich also attended the conference.

All three students were nominated for the conference’s awards and Jude Knife, a Queer Studies minor, received one of only four total awards for a paper titled, “Toxic Roots: Remnants of White Minority Rule in Zimbabwe.” Kayley DeLong presented “Queering the Memorial: AIDS Melancholia and Breathing in Death,” and Alejandrx Martinez presented “Colonial Violence and Xicana Punk Uprisings.”

The Northwest Undergraduate Conference in the Humanities gives undergraduate students from the Northwest region the opportunity to present their work in a public and professional academic setting. Students from a wide range of institutions across the Northwest presented on subjects spanning from literature, creative writing, philosophy, ancient and modern languages, history, ethnic studies, religious studies, women’s studies, cultural studies, film and visual culture, and the fine arts.
