WGSS professors, majors, minors, and museum staff enjoyed meeting with artist Kate Gilmore before her gallery talk at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA). The group talked informally over a catered lunch co-sponsored by WGSS and JSMA prior to Gilmore’s talk, titled In Your Way.

Later that afternoon, New York-based artist Kate Gilmore gave a gallery talk and performance for In Your Way from 4:30-6:30 at the JSMA. In Your Way features ten works, including nine performance-based videos and one live performance, with audience participation recommended. The exhibition was housed at the JSMA from October 15 until December 22.

Gilmore’s work features feminist themes that critique male dominated movements such as Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. She is known for synthesizing multiple artistic mediums including performance, video, sculpture, and painting. The exhibition presents physical situations and actions that act as metaphors for the cultural and social challenges facing women.
