Congratulations to WGSS Affiliate Faculty member Melissa Parkhurst, PhD, and ethnomusicologist in WSU’s School of Music. Dr. Parkhurst has received the first WGSS Cross-Listed Course Revision Grant!

The grant supports changes to the online version of MUS/WOMEN_ST 363: Women in Music, and specifically addresses increased demand for the course. Professor Sheila Converse created the online version, and since her retirement, Dr. Parkhurst and Dr. Sophia Tegart, Clinical Assistant Professor of Flute, have been teaching the course, which is typically offered both fall and spring semesters and during the summer.

Dr. Parkhurst holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she wrote a dissertation on the role of music in the federal boarding school system for Native American children. She also earned a master’s degree from UW, with a thesis on women polka band leaders. Dr. Parkhurst is the author of To Win the Indian Heart: Music at Chemawa Indian School (Oregon State University Press, 2014 http://osupress.oregonstate.edu/book/to-win-indian-heart) and co-editor of Niimiipuum We’nipt: Songs of the People (Washington State University Press, forthcoming).
