Call for Proposals
In his book Cruising Utopia, Jose Muñoz importantly reminds us about the world-making potential that queerness signals. Queerness, as he suggests, exists only on the horizon—as a utopian possibility—an ideal that has yet to be realized.
To further explore and expand on the potential and future of queer theory and politics, we invite proposals for scholarly papers at the 2018 InQueery Symposium at Washington State University that engage such questions as: What queer visions have still to be actualized? What kinds of organizing within queer activism require renewed energy and mobilization? What pasts and histories of queerness are such futures predicated on? What are the limits of contemporary queer political imaginations? How can we move beyond these limits and articulate different futures? How can we be practical and yet demand the impossible?
We welcome proposals for 10-minute paper presentations on topics that could include, but are not limited to the following:
- Transgender media visibility
- Queer activism in the Trump era
- The intersections between queer politics and Black Lives Matter organizing
- Queering Immigration politics
- The past and future of AIDS activism
- Indigenous queer studies
- Critiques of respectability politics
- Queer politics and reproductive justice
- Queerness and Disability
- Queer Art as activism
- Transgender and feminist politics
- Transnational considerations of queerness
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted online here. Undergraduate students are especially encouraged to submit proposals. Proposals are due Sept. 5, 2018. Presenters will be notified Sept. 19, 2018.
